I arrived in Split in the early hours of the morning and was able to see this beautiful town wake up. The town is on the Adriatic Sea and is a holiday place for many Europeans. The streets are made of marble in the old town, it’s also surrounded by a wall (again) and has many old buildings. The town actually reminded me of a Moroccan town as the streets were narrow and devoid of traffic and the amount of times I got lost or ended up coming around in circles astounded me. The highlight of my time here definitely was the food. We ended up eating at an amazing cafĂ© called Fife which served up portions of BBQ seafood, squid risotto and calamari, topped off with some Croatian beer. This is the country where I was first introduced to the 2L bottle of beer in a plastic coke-style container. Classy I here you say but when you only pay $2-3 aussie dollars for it then on a backpacker budget how can you say no!
Europeans have a weird idea of what a beach is. The beach in Split is basically a tiny bit of sand in which everyone tries to cram onto and then numerous concrete boardwalks surrounded by many bars/restaurants which try to put as many deck chairs as possible out in the hope that you will sit in one and pay a stupid amount of money. After split I headed up to Bosnia…..
